Having enjoyed this well written detective story about the investigation of bank robberies in Ireland and Sweden, I feel like a personal friend of Chief Inspector Bill Hardwick. What is widely known as Nordic Noir, popular crime novels by Nordic writers, runs the risk of getting more and more stereotyped owing to the fact that they are numerous, popular and profitable.
One way of developing this genre may be to give the main characters more ordinary human characteristics, so that we can identify with them. The private life of Bill Hardwick, his family, his interests och thoughts are described in great detail. This is unusual in crime novels. Where many readers will expect a tough hero they meet a kind family man, who is also a sharp-witted detective. Instead of getting another of the countless detective stories about a strong and tough detective we get to know an ordinary Swedish man, who has a dangerous and hard job and who succeeds in the end. The profit of the crime novel is in this way considerable.
